I was just over reading The Happy Rocks analysis of his cash only spending experiment that he started back in July. He and his wife (or girlfriend, Im not sure which) went the entire month of July without using any plastic. Why Because he was testing Dave Ramseys argument that people can save 12 18 by spending only cash. How Dave came up with that number is anyones guess (the same thing can be said for his personal finance is 80 behavior and 20 head knowledge saying).

First off, if you are a young person saving for retirement my advice is to ignore volatility. If volatility makes you sick to your stomach, dont check your 401(k) balance.
That said, if you are a retiree or close to retiring, volatility can wreak havoc on your portfolio. Today, I received my first paycheck of the new year. With this new paycheck came quite a few changes to the deductions included in it.

For starters, I modified my withholding for 2008 to increase the amount paid to the IRS every two weeks. Because this is my first full year in my new position, I ran my potential earnings through the IRSs withholding calculator to make sure that I am putting enough in, that I wont need to pay anything next year, but not too much.
